Caller ID Name (CNAM), the feature displaying the caller's name on your phone during an incoming call, operates differently in the US and Canada.

US:

  • Several national CNAM databases store the association between phone numbers and their corresponding names.
  • Enabling a CNAM listing for a US number inserts its details into these databases.
  • During a US call, the receiving carrier checks these databases for the CNAM associated with the calling number.
  • Both the call and the retrieved CNAM are then delivered to the receiving party.

Canada:

  • Canada lacks a centralized CNAM database.
  • The responsibility for delivering CNAM information lies with the individual carriers.
  • CNAM data for Canadian phone numbers is typically included within the account information provided by the carrier.

Number Shack and CNAM:

  • As Number Shack doesn't offer phone service, no CNAM record is automatically assigned to a purchased number.
  • After porting your number to your chosen carrier, simply contact them to request and activate your desired CNAM.

In summary:

  • The US employs a centralized database system for CNAM, while Canada relies on individual carriers for managing this information.
  • Ensure you activate your desired CNAM with your chosen carrier after porting your Number Shack number.
